How Kawit will be celebrating Pride month in the time of COVID-19

The pandemic is still raging but it will not stop a local government in Cavite from celebrating Pride and supporting the LGBTQIA++ community.

It’s the Pride month. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic is still ongoing, prompting the government to ban big public events such as the traditional march and annual festivals.

But even the virus will not hinder the municipality of Kawit in Cavite in celebrating the Pride month with the LGBTQIA++ community by launching a gay beauty pageant.

Town mayor Angelo Aguinaldo released the photos of the 18 official candidates of Miss Gay Kawit 2021 in his official Facebook page on Friday, June 11.

Candidates vying for the crown will represent the barangays of Aplaya, Balsahan – Bisita, Batong Dalig, Congbalay – Legaspi, Kaingen, Kanluran, Manggahan – Lawin, Marulas, Panamitan, Poblacion, Potol-Magdalo, Pulvorista, Samala – Marquez, San Sebastian, Sta. Isabel, Tabon 1, 2, & 3, Toclong, and Wakas 1 & 2.

Organizers assured health standards will be observed as the threat of the virus remains.

The pageant’s coronation day will be livestreamed at Mayor Aguinaldo’s Facebook page on June 18.

While the upcoming pageant is indeed exciting, this will not be the first time that Kawit LGU will defy the COVID-19 pandemic just to display their love and unity for the LGBTQIA++ community.

To recall, Mayor Aguinaldo led “Rampa sa Kawit! Rampa Na!” event on February 29 last year featuring a Pride march, a street dancing competition, and a talent show. It also coincided the signing of an anti-discrimination municipal ordinance aimed at creating safe spaces for everyone regardless of their gender.
