PAGASA announces onset of El Niño

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially announced on Tuesday the onset of El Niño due to the warmer temperatures in the Tropical Pacific.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially announced on Tuesday the onset of El Niño due to the warmer temperatures in the Tropical Pacific.

In a press briefing, PAGASA said the effect will be felt in the Philippines starting in October.

“With this announcement, we are formally acknowledging the onset of the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, which will subsequently impact our country,” Ana Liza Solis, the chief of PAGASA’s Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section, stated.

Moreover, the state weather bureau added that although the current El Niño is “weak,” it is showing signs that it would get hotter in the coming months.

“There are models showing a high probability of more than 56 percent that El Niño may become moderate to strong at least during the last quarter of the year,” Solis said.

According to the PAGASA models, El Niño will last from July 2023 to January 2024.
