Carmona is on the verge of becoming a city after the House of Representatives on its third and final reading approved a bill to make the town one of Cavite’s component cities.

The lower house agreed by a vote of 249-0 to pass House Bill No. 3968, introduced by Cavite 5th District Rep. Roy Loyola, approving Carmona as the province’s eighth city.

The town will become an official city after the measures are ratified in a plebiscite, which will be held two months after the proposal is passed.

As such, as stated in the Section 1 of the Republic Act No. 11683, “a municipality or a cluster of barangays with a locally generated average annual income, as certified by the Department of Finance, of at least P400 million for the last two consecutive years based on 2012 constant prices may also be converted into a component city if it has either a population of not less than 100,000 inhabitants as certified by the PSA.”

Carmona is currently a first-class urban municipality in Cavite, with a total population of 106,256 as of May 2020 and an annual income generated locally of more than P400 million.
