CAVITE — An assistant prosecutor in Trece Martires City was shot in the head and killed on Friday morning, December 31.

According to the police report, lawyer Edilbert Mendoza, 48, was in his yard in Elysian Field Subdivision in Brgy. Cabuco around 7:30 a.m. and was killed instantly after being shot three times by a lone gunman.

Investigator-on-case PSSg Rene Bibon told the Manila Bulletin that Mendoza was seen exercising with jumping ropes in a CCTV footage when a man dressed in a black shirt, denim jeans and a white cap ran towards him and shot him from behind.

The gunman fled from the scene with his weapon, the police said.

Mendoza was an assistant city prosecutor and currently assigned to the Regional Trial Court branch of Trece Martires.

As per the investigation, the crime was either work-related or motivated by a personal grudge.

Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Investigation has begun an investigation into the prosecutor’s death, and the Cavite police have announced the formation of a special task force to handle the issue.
