The Imus and Bacoor retarding basins, the two reservoir projects in Barangay Buhay na Tubig and Barangay Anabu, respectively, are currently under construction and are now 85 percent complete, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

This P2.2 billion flood risk management project is expected to reduce flood peak discharges to low-lying areas of the Imus and Bacoor Rivers by temporarily managing flood run-off or storm water in off-site retarding basins.

The Imus retarding basin has a detention pond area of approximately 35 hectares, whereas the Bacoor retarding basin has two temporary storages for a total area of nine hectares to contain floodwaters during a storm and reduce the peak volume of flood flow in the Imus and Bacoor rivers.

The project, which is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2021, is based on a flood management master plan for the Imus River prepared by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar is confident that these retarding basins are the most viable solution for mitigating damage in flood-prone areas.

“We have high hopes that this project will reduced flood risk to local homes and businesses,” said Villar.
