PH hits another record high with 33,169 new COVID-19 cases

It is the third straight day that the Philippines reported a record-breaking number of new coronavirus cases in a single day. It is also the first time in the pandemic history that the country hit over 30,000 fresh infections.

The Philippines logged another record-high daily tally of COVID-19 cases as 33,169 fresh infections were confirmed on Monday, Jan. 10. 

This is the third consecutive day that the country broke previous all-time high records and the first time since the pandemic began that it breached the 30,000 mark, surpassing the 28,707 cases reported just yesterday.

The latest figure brings the country’s total cases of the viral respiratory illness to 2,998,530. Of these, 157,256 are still active. 

The DOH also recorded a new all-time high positive rate of 46% out of 73, 234 tests conducted. This means two out of five people tested turned out to be positive for the virus. 

Furthermore, the DOH confirmed 145 more fatalities due to COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 52,293. 

Meanwhile, 3,725 more patients survived the disease. Total recoveries are at 2,788,711 which represents 93 percent of the country’s total caseload. 

The new all-time high COVID-19 cases come as the Philippines is facing a post-holiday surge believed to be fueled by the Omicron variant. 

The DOH earlier said the local transmission of Omicron in the Philippines is “assumed” but has yet to confirm such as of posting.
