Philippines’ daily COVID-19 cases hit new all-time high at 37,207

The country keeps on setting new record-high COVID-19 daily tally as it struggles to contain the spread of the virus amid growing concens over the more transmissible Omicron variant.

The Philippines on Friday recorded 37,207 new COVID-19 infections, the highest case number reported in a single day since the pandemic hit the country.

This broke the previous record of 34,021 cases, which was logged just yesterday, January 13.

The country now has a total 3,129,512 confirmed COVID-19 cases according to the latest bullletin of the Department of Health (DOH).

Active cases, meanwhile, soared to 265,509, accounting for 8.5 percent of the running tally.

A positivity rate of 47. 3 percent was also posted, which is second highest-ever reported. This means almost one out of two people tested turned out to be positive for the virus.

Furthermore, the DOH confirmed 81 more fatalities due to COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 52,815.

Meanwhile, 9,027 more patients survived the disease. Total recoveries are at 2,811,188 which represents 89.8 percent of the country’s total caseload.

The new all-time high COVID-19 cases come as the Philippines is facing a post-holiday surge driven by the highly infectious Omicron variant.

As of January 6, there were 43 known cases of Omicron but concerns are mounting that more people may be actually infected with the highly contagious strain who were left undetected by the limited genome sequencing.

The World Health Organization said the more transmissible Omicron may soon replace Delta as the dominant COVID-19 variant in the Philippines.
