The Provincial Government of Cavite has placed the province under a state of calamity on Wednesday, March 27, due to the outbreak of pertussis or whooping cough.
In their special session, the Provincial Council convened and approved the recommendation of the provincial emergency team following the 36 recorded cases of pertussis in the province.
Here is the breakdown of the reported cases of pertussis in Cavite according to the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit as of March 25, 2024.
- Bacoor City – 6 cases, 1 dead
- Trece Martires City – 6 cases
- Gen. Trias City – 5 cases, 2 dead
- Gen. Mariano Alvarez – 4 cases
- Carmona City – 3 cases, 1 dead
- Silang – 3 cases
- Dasmarinas City – 2 cases
- Kawit – 2 cases
- Imus City – 2 cases, 1 dead
- Cavite City – 1 case
- Tagaytay City – 1 cases
- Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo – 1 case, 1 dead
The provincial government also allocated P40 million from Cavite’s 2024 Quick Response Fund of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to effectively respond to the said calamity.
The pertussis or whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by a specific bacteria.
According to the World Health Organization, it can easily spread from person to person mainly through droplets produced by coughing or sneezing, and is most dangerous for infants.
