MANILA Electric Co. (Meralco) has started the construction of new substation in Kawit to support the rising electricity demand of industrial expansion in the area, the company announced on Wednesday.
Meralco has recently signed an agreement with solutions provider First Orient International Ventures Corporation (FOIVC) for developing a gas-insulated switchgear substation on a 2,377 square-meter land bank in Island Cove.
According to Ferdinand Geluz, Meralco’s first vice president, the Island Cove substation will be an integral part of the Meralco distribution system in Cavite, supporting not just Island Cove’s power requirements but also that of the communities around Kawit and Bacoor.
“The lot donation of the FOIVC group, where the substation is being built, is an enormous help for Meralco’s continuing efforts to deliver reliable power to our customers,” Geluz added.
Moreover, the Kawit substation will assist in meeting Island Cove’s energy needs once fully operational by providing the necessary switching flexibility, including the new load application and loaded circuits of existing Meralco substations, as well as voltage regulation in the area.
Three transformer banks with 249 megavolt amperes (MVA) will be housed in the new substation set to be operational by April 2024.

Meralco is the biggest private-sector utility and electric power distribution firm in the country.
