The municipality of Carmona, the richest town in the Philippines, is now a step closer to attaining its state of becoming the eighth city in the province of Cavite after the Senate approved its cityhood measure on its third and final reading.

On Monday, January 30, House Bill No. 3968, or the proposed city charter of Carmona, was passed by a vote of 19-0-0 during the Senate plenary hearing.

Sen. JV Ejercito, chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government and the principal sponsor of the bill, stated that the town possesses all of the features of a city, qualifying it to be recognized as a component city.

“This bill embodies the hard work, dreams, and aspirations of the people of Carmona. The passage of the bill will pave more opportunities for its people and more investment for its local government,” Ejercito said.

Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., on the other hand, expressed gratitude to his colleagues for passing the measures, saying that it is a huge honor for him and his fellow Cavitenos.

“As we continue to contribute to the country with our vibrant economy, we will continue to spread our roots for the enrichment not only of our humble province but the entire nation,” Revilla added.

Carmona is currently a first-class urban municipality in Cavite, with a total population of 106,256 as of May 2020 and an annual income generated locally of more than P400 million.
