The Department of Health gave safety tips and warned the public against overcrowding in churches in observance of this year’s Holy Week season.

DOH explained that the public must remain vigilant and practice the infection prevention and control measures, such as proper use of face masks, getting vaccinated and/or booster shot, physical distancing, and proper hygiene to help limit the spread of the virus during the Lenten season.

“Siguraduhing maayos ang airflow sa mga lugar na pupuntahan. Kung biglang hindi maganda ang pakiramdam, mag-isolate at stay at home na lang muna,” DOH posted in their Facebook page.

At a press conference last Friday, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire warned the public to avoid “penitensya” or acts of penance such as flogging, crucifixion, and self-flagellation, among others to avoid tetanus and having wounds and infection.

They also discouraged the public from kissing images in churches as COVID-19 can be transmitted through droplets such as saliva.

DOH said that a rise in COVID cases is not a distant possibility if the public does not comply with minimum protocols during the Holy Week break and during campaign rallies especially in provinces with low vaccination rates.

“Let us try to remember na ang transmission ng virus ay meron pa rin sa ating bansa… Pangalawa nandyan na rin ang ating pagbabakasyon, sana po isipin gusto natin magenjoy but we want everybody safe,” Vergeire added.
