The area occupied by informal settlers shown in a viral video is not part of Kawit, Cavite, an official clarified on August 2.
Kawit Mayor Angelo Aguinaldo, together with municipal administrator Rey Santos and other local officials, inspected the said area early Monday to assess whether or not it is still within the municipality’s jurisdiction.
“Totoo pong may mga bahay na nakatayo sa gitna ng ilog pero hindi po totoong Kawit ang siyang nakakasakop ng lugar kung saan nakatayo ang mga bahay,” Santos wrote in a lengthy Facebook post.
He added: “Ito po’y maliwanag base sa cadastral map ng ating lalawigan at maging sa boundary marker na itinayo mismo ng DPWH…[M]alinaw pong IMUS ang nakakasakop sa naturang lugar.”
These came after a video was posted on Facebook by Carrie Villanueva on Saturday, July 31 where she ranted about how ‘squatters’ were allowed to build makeshift houses at the middle of a river.

She also blamed the informal settlers for allegedly worsening the recent flooding in nearby barangays of Imus, Cavite.
“Oh tingnan niyo naman ang ilog natin, nasa gitna na yung mga bahay. Nabaha na, nabaha…Kayo na ang maghusga kung anong klase ‘to.” she said in the video which so far has more than 5,000 views.
Moreover, Villanueva can be heard repeatedly mentioning Mayor Aguinaldo as she asked the local chief executive to ‘solve’ the problem by relocating the informal settlers.
Villanueva appeared to be a chaperone of Imus City councilor Jose Elmer Emoy Francisco, who was also caught in the video worrying about how the houses of informal settlers supposedly block the flow of floodwater.
Some Facebook users were all praises for her for outspokenly raising her concerns.
However, others were also quick to correct Villanueva that the area is still actually part of Imus and defended the Kawit government from her criticisms.
Nevertheless, Santos said they will be sending a letter to Imus Mayor Emmanuel Maliksi to discuss the issue.
The Cavite Rising is still trying to reach Mayor Maliksi for comment.
