Kawit’s ‘Maytinis Festival’ goes virtual due to COVID-19

Even the pandemic can’t hinder the well-loved tradition of Christmas in Kawit, Cavite as it celebrated the Maytinis Festival in the new normal way on Friday, December 24.

Even the pandemic can’t hinder the well-loved tradition of Christmas in Kawit, Cavite as it celebrated the Maytinis Festival in the new normal way on Friday, December 24. 

The festival is a unique representation of the ancient Biblical history of mankind’s salvation through the procession of dazzling floats carrying local folks portraying various Biblical characters.

Traditionally held on Christmas eve, locals and tourists look forward to this every holiday season.

This year, organizers conducted the program virtually keeping in mind the safety of Kawiteños.

The highlight of the event was the musical retelling of Joseph and Mary’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem.

The festival also featured the story of God’s promise to Zacarias; the story of Moses, as well as that of and Samson and Delilah among many others. 

A life-size manger also became an attraction at the altar of St. Mary Magdalene Church and the Christmas lights outside which symbolized hope amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, hours before the event, well-known bands from the town also showcased a number of performances.

The Ama and Ina in this year’s Maytinis were Mayor Angelo Emilio G. Aguinaldo and Sister Edith Rieta Castillo.
